I’m on holiday in sunny South Africa, visiting my family, and to be honest, I never thought I’d get a cold here. After all, the weather is warm, and I’ve spent most of my time basking in the sun. Yet, here I am, sniffling and sneezing just like I might if I were back in the chilly UK! The irony, of course, is that a common cold can strike at any time, no matter where you are. 


If you’ve found yourself under the weather and are wondering how to manage your cold symptoms naturally, you might want to consider acupuncture. Located on the back of the hand, between the thumb and the index finger, this point is fantastic for relieving general cold symptoms, headaches, and sinus congestion. I’ve been using it for the last 24 hours and it’s worked a treat on reducing sinus pain and congestion, especially just before bed time! 


To use this point for a cold: 

  • Use your opposite thumb and index finger to squeeze gently but firmly on the CO4 point. 

  • Hold the pressure for about 30 seconds, then release. 

  • Repeat several times, switching hands as needed. 


CO4 is also often used to relieve pain and strengthen the immune system. However, please note that CO4 should not be used during pregnancy, as it is also used to stimulate contractions. Always consult a professional before using acupressure during pregnancy. 


2. LU7 (Lieque) – The "Broken Sequence" Point 


Another great point for cold relief is LU7, which is located on the inside of the forearm, about 2 thumb widths from the wrist. This point is linked to the lung meridian and is often used for respiratory issues like coughing, sore throats, and nasal congestion. 


To stimulate LU7: 

  • Place your thumb on the point and gently press. 

  • You can also massage this point in a circular motion to help relieve congestion and ease respiratory discomfort. 


3. ST36 (Zusanli) – The Vitality Boost 


ST36 is often referred to as the “vitality point” and is located on the lower leg, about three finger-widths below the kneecap. Stimulating this point can support your body’s immune response and help with fatigue, which often accompanies a cold. 


To find and activate ST36: 

  • Sit down comfortably and locate the point about three finger-widths below your kneecap, along the outside of your shinbone. 

  • Apply gentle pressure with your thumb for a few minutes, taking slow and deep breaths. 


4. DU14 (Dazhui) – The Great Vertebra Point 


DU14, located at the base of the neck, is another essential point for colds. It’s commonly used for fevers, chills, and general body aches that often accompany a cold. This point is also believed to help regulate the immune system. 


To activate DU14: 

  • Use your fingers to gently press the area at the back of your neck where the base of your skull meets your spine. 

  • Apply steady pressure and breathe deeply for a few minutes. 


Lifestyle Tips for Supporting Your Health 


Acupuncture and acupressure are great tools, but your lifestyle also plays a huge role in how well your body fights off colds. Here are some tips to support your health and wellbeing during cold season: 


1. Rest and Hydration 


When you catch a cold, your body needs time to recover. Get plenty of sleep to allow your immune system to work its magic. Staying hydrated is equally important — drink lots of warm water, herbal teas, lemon and honey in hot water and broths to keep your body hydrated and help loosen mucus. 


2. Eat Immune-Boosting Foods 


Your diet can support your recovery, so focus on immune-boosting foods like garlic, ginger, citrus fruits, and leafy greens. Bone broth, hot soups, and spicy foods like chili peppers can also help clear nasal passages. 


3. Gentle Exercise 


If you’re feeling up to it, gentle movement like yoga, qigong, tai chi or stretching can help improve circulation and promote healing. But don’t push yourself too hard — rest when you need to. 


4. Stress Management 


Stress can suppress your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off illness. Practice stress-relieving activities like meditation, deep breathing, qigong or simply sitting in a quiet place for a few minutes each day. 


5. Avoid Over-Crowded Places 


If you’re prone to catching colds, try to avoid crowded spaces where germs can easily spread.
