Chinese medicine offers a range of traditional methods aimed at restoring health and balance. Among these, Qigong and acupuncture stand out as two powerful practices. In this article, we delve into the practical relationship between Qigong and acupuncture, exploring how they complement each other within the framework of Chinese medicine. Moreover, we'll uncover the significance of Qigong in empowering patients to take an active role in their healing journey and bridging the gaps between acupuncture treatments.

Understanding Qigong and Acupuncture

Qigong: Rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, Qigong (pronounced as "chee-gong") is an intricate practice that combines gentle movements, controlled breathing, and focused meditation. It is founded on the principle of Qi (pronounced as "chee"), the vital life force that flows through the body. The purpose of Qigong is to cultivate and balance this Qi, thereby enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Qigong comprises various forms and styles, each tailored to specific purposes.

At Acupuncture Surrey, your acupuncturist, Nicci, is trained in a form of Qigong called Taijiwuxigong, has been practicing it for well over a decade and teaching since 2017. Taijiwuigong was developed by Dr Shen Hongxun and is based on the principles of tai chi. Taijiwuxigong aims to build energy for health and wellbeing, often including ‘spontaneous movement’ which is a way to allow the body to regulate itself, bringing about balance for improved health and mood.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture, another cornerstone of Chinese medicine, involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body known as acupoints. These acupoints are situated along meridians, channels through which Qi flows. By stimulating these points, an acupuncturist seeks to regulate the flow of Qi and restore balance in the body's systems. Acupuncture is widely used to alleviate pain, treat various health conditions, and promote relaxation.

Complementary Harmony

The synergy between Qigong and acupuncture is rooted in their shared foundational principles, particularly the concept of Qi flow and balance. Both practices recognize that an obstruction or imbalance in the flow of Qi can lead to physical and emotional discomfort. By addressing these imbalances, Qigong and acupuncture facilitate the body's natural healing mechanisms.

Enhanced Qi Flow: Qigong enhances the flow of Qi through its gentle movements and deep breathing techniques. These movements are designed to clear energy blockages and promote smooth circulation of Qi throughout the body. When combined with acupuncture, which also focuses on restoring proper Qi flow along meridians, the two practices work together to amplify the effects and efficiency of Qi regulation.

Stress Reduction: Stress is a common modern ailment that disrupts the body's equilibrium. Both Qigong and acupuncture have been shown to reduce stress by activating the body's relaxation response. Qigong's meditative elements and acupuncture's ability to release endorphins contribute to this calming effect, resulting in a deeper sense of tranquility when practiced in tandem.

Empowerment and Self-Care: Qigong serves as a bridge between professional treatments and personal healing efforts. With its gentle movements and emphasis on controlled breathing, Qigong provides patients with a tangible way to engage with their health on a daily basis. This active participation cultivates a sense of agency, allowing individuals to feel more in control of their well-being. While acupuncture sessions are crucial in rebalancing the body's energy flow, Qigong steps in as a self-care practice that extends the benefits beyond the treatment room. This empowerment not only fosters a deeper connection between the patient and their healing process but also fills the gaps between acupuncture sessions, ensuring a more consistent and continuous approach to wellness.

The combination of Qigong and acupuncture within Chinese medicine offers a practical and effective approach to healing. By leveraging their shared principles, these practices enhance each other's benefits. Moreover, the inclusion of Qigong empowers patients, allowing them to play an active role in their healing journey. This dynamic practice not only bridges the gaps between acupuncture treatments but also provides individuals with a powerful tool to maintain balance and well-being in their daily lives. Embracing both Qigong and acupuncture allows individuals to tap into a holistic pathway to well-being that encompasses both body and mind, showcasing the strength of traditional practices when used in tandem.

Taijiwuxigong: Taijiwuxigong is a great support in combination with acupuncture or as a preventative practice. Nicci teaches Taijiwuxigong and Tai Chi under the banner of Tai Chi & Qigong Surrey with regular weekly classes in Reigate.
